As the UK begins to settle down after seeing two weeks of thrilling sporting action at the London 2012 Olympic Games many commentators are reflecting on the success of Team GB . The medal total for Team GB was 29 Gold , 17 Silver and 19 Bronze placing them third in the overall medal table being beaten only by the might of the USA and China – an incredible achievement by Team GB , given the size and population of the UK compared to many other countries who were way behind in the medal table .
National Lottery players however will not be surprised by these results – the National Lottery has contributed the bulk sum of the investment in Olympic and Paralympic Sports : £183.5 million out of a total of £313.5 million.
The National Lottery also provided £2.2 billion towards the construction of the London 2012 Olympic Stadium , the popular Velodrome and the Aquatic Centre.
The facts speak for themselves – National Lottery starts in 1994 and by 1997 British athletes begin to receive Lottery funding . Every Olympic Games since has seen a marked improvement in the Team GB medal haul – 11 Golds in Sydney in 2000 , 19 Golds in Beijing in 2008 leading to 29 Golds in London in 2012 .
So National Lottery players can be proud of their contribution to Team GB’s success – keep on playing , we need to do even better in Rio in 2016 !!
